Hi class! My name is Nataly Aguiar, and I am a senior studying Journalism and Spanish. Since this course is on social media storytelling/communication, I thought it would be fitting to choose a blog topic on how I believe information empowers people and builds community.

Spanish/second-language news reporting holds a uniquely crucial role, especially within rural communities like the ones surrounding our university. With a Hispanic population of 4%, Watauga County has fewer local Spanish news sources than the rest of the state.
Mainstream media, predominantly in English, can often overlook the needs and concerns of the Hispanic community. By providing news in Spanish, media outlets can ensure that critical information reaches everyone, promoting inclusivity and safety in an age where misinformation spreads rapidly, especially through social media.
All communities where English is not the primary language deserve trustworthy sources catered to them that are both timely and that debunk this misinformation– the Hispanic community was disproportionately affected during the COVID-19 pandemic and Spanish news sources had a crucial role during this time of crisis.
As a first-generation Latina, I know firsthand how Spanish-language news reporting plays a vital role in celebrating cultural identity. It promotes a sense of belonging within the community through engaging cultural representation, this connection is vital in smaller counties like Watauga.
(where cultural preservation can be more challenging due to isolation and limited resources.) By empowering and informing Spanish speakers about local resources and issues, and making their voices feel heard, they are statistically more likely to participate within their local community.
I look forward to working with you all!
~Nataly.
